CHAPTER 17

“Luke! Wake up Luke!”

He could hear a voice, but it sounded far away and ethereal. Luke slowly began to open his eyes, and directly in front of them was someone that he knew very well.

Jen leaned and kissed him on the mouth, or rather, gave him the kiss of life. He felt air being pushed into his lungs, and realized that it was exactly what his body needed. He coughed, and then sputtered out salty seawater to his side, onto the beach.

“You’re alive! This is amazing! You’re alive!”

Jen was shaking him. Her face was wet, either from the rain or from her crying over him. Her shirt was soaked to her body, making the curves of her breasts and poky dots of her nipples very noticeable.

“Jen…Is that you?” Luke felt slow and groggy, as if his body was still adjusting to the fact that it hadn’t drowned.

“Yes, it’s me baby bro! I got you!”

She helped him to his feet in a nick of time. Another huge wave crashed against the shore right where he had been lying, bringing with it enough forceful water to push at their legs and knock them off balance. Jen brushed wet locks of hair out of her face, and then grabbed his hand.

“Come on, I have to get you back to the cave,” she said.

Luke started to go with her, and then remembered.

“The canoe!” Luke shouted, tearing away from his sister and running back to the beach. “Jen, I have to find it!”

She gave him a very confused look and followed slowly.

“Canoe…? Just how can there be…? Luke, where did you go?”

“I’ll explain later,” he said. “Just spread out along the beach and see if you can spot it.”

It was easier said than done. The rain was still coming down in heavy sheets, and a thick, misty fog hung in the air. Every few seconds, lightning would strike somewhere in the distance, and the scene would be illuminated perfectly for one ghostly frame.

Luke would think that had found it, bobbing off in the distance above the waves, and then it would just disappear. He started to doubt his eyes, and whether or not it was even possible to find it, when Jen let out a cry from down on her side of the beach.

“Luke!” she yelled. “Over here!”

She was right by the corner of the bend, half in the water, desperately clinging to something with one hand. Luke sprinted across the surf towards her. He made it just in time, with a big wave dislodging Jen’s footing and dragging her forward the second before he gripped her around the waist.

“I got you, sis!” he yelled.

He had her, and she had the canoe. It took all of both of their strength to haul the thing, heavy and waterlogged, onto the shore. Once they had, they kept pushing it up the sand until it was in the jungle, locked safely away against some of the trees and foliage.

“Watch out!” Jen yelled and pushed him back, just out of the reach of a giant wave, easily big enough to sweep him out to sea.
